Performance Pet Products has generously donated several pallets of canned dog and cat food to our cause.  We have started a food bank and the Salvation Army will give this pet food to needy people that need help feeding their pets.  Same restrictions will apply to the pet food bank as do to the food pantry.  If you apply and qualify for the SNIP program, you will also qualify for pet food.   You can also pick up pet food at the James Valley Community Center, 300 E 1st, Mitchell, SD.
Thanks to Rose and Lee for contacting us and allowing us to use the donations for this great program.
If you or someone you know is in need of food for your pet, please call us at 605-770-2170.

We are an official 501c3 non profit organization, not to be confused with any other local rescue.

SNIP is a program to assist needy people with the expense of spaying or neutering their pets.  To see if you qualify, request an application by emailing us at mitchellanimalrescue@yahoo.com or calling Kathie at 999-2524.

On December 31st, 2009, live racing will cease at Dairyland Greyhound Park bringing the end of an era to Wisconsin dog tracks. Our strategic plan is to step up our efforts of public awareness through media coverage and special events to educate the public about what great pets greyhounds can make when their racing careers are completed. With that awareness, our hope is to generate more adoption applications than we normally receive this time of year, in order to place more greyhounds into loving homes.
If you've ever thought about owning or adopting a greyhound, contact www.gpawisconsin.org.

Mitchell Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization that recently celebrated its one year anniversary.  Unfortunately, with tough economic times and multiple puppy and kitten births, we are rescuing more pets than expected.  So far in 2009 we have rescued almost 250 dogs and cats from euthanization.
MAR does not have a shelter and we rely on volunteers to open their homes to rescued pets.  If you would like to foster a rescued pet, please let us know.
We are looking for an empty building to use or rent for a small fee to help us meet the increasing number of animals who need our help.  If you know of a space, you can reach us on our cell 770-2170 or at mitchellanimalrescue@yahoo.com.

  • We are in need of Scoop Away or Fresh Step Multi Cat  litter.  If anyone would like to donate, let us know.
  • Our permanent foster cat, Max, has a digestive disorder and the only food he can eat is Hills Prescription Diet Z/D Low Allergen.  If anyone would like to donate cat food for Max, let us know.

We are willing to trap feral cats if you know of any farmers that would like cats for mousers.  Contact us either by email or phone.

Please be responsible and have your pet spayed or neutered.  Help us prevent overpopulation of the shelter.  There are other benefits to spaying or neutering your pet. It’s safer for the animal and it prevents cancer and other illnesses.   Unaltered males can get prostrate cancer just like humans; unaltered females can get ovarian or uterine cancers just like humans also.  Spaying and neutering can prevent these types of cancers.

Mitchell has a leash law that requires ALL pets to be on a leash when off your personal property. With the weather improving, it is sometimes tempting to let your pet out to do his or her business without a leash because he or she has never left your property before.   It only takes one time and in the blink of an eye they are gone.  Not only does this violate the leash law, but it is NOT SAFE for your pet.  They don't know to stay off the streets or to avoid cars or other animals.  PLEASE keep your pets on a leash or in a fenced in yard, not only for their safety, but to prevent unwanted litters.  Please be responsible pet owners - think of them when you let them out the door.
